The chair is a little large and bulky for this space and appears to be floating because of its position. The accessories don’t have much cohesion and are placed at random.
After...
From the picture above, you can see that the blue upholstered chair was moved appropriately to the corner of the room near the window, giving that area some weight. It was replaced by a chair with a lighter look and feel, and was positioned closer to the fireplace to appear attached to that area instead of floating. An artificial ficus tree was added to help visually separate the room into the main LR area and the piano area. The lamp was replaced with one that fit the space better and provided slightly better task lighting. The accessories were changed out from other rooms and some just repositioned according to proper scale and balance principles.
Before...The sofa along the wall of this long, narrow LR is too large for the wall’s width. The large bookshelf, along with the sofa and placement of the coffee table, is creating a very narrow passageway and obstructing traffic to the porch. The bookshelf appears even more intrusive in this small area between the door and the fireplace (not shown) because it is very full, and the accessories on top make it look cluttered and heavy. There is only sufficient task light on one side of the seating area.
After...
With the seating and table arrangement, the area now has a more appropriately scaled and more functional arrangement for this wall. Each seat can share the task light placed between them, and have a place to set down a glass or a book without obstructing the path to the porch door. The wall where the bookcase used to be was replaced with a smaller piece that brings a sense of lightness to this small wall. The floral vases and picture above it compliment each other nicely. This new arrangement also allows more of the homeowners accessories to be displaced and gives the room a more light and delicate feel, while keeping it functional.
